I was sitting on my porch every evening, watching ash fall down like snow, the sky looking like it was on fire. It was an apocalyptic feeling. Summer in Portland is usually really chill and beautiful, and we were working on a ‘summer record,’ but the outside world kept intruding on my headspace.”\u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eV.\u003c\/i\u003e, a graphic representation of the Peace sign, seemed apt to an album focused on the power of peace, beauty and resistance. The music is a balm against the noise and negativity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first single “Staring At The Sun” is a nearly 8 minute laid back, slowly building narrative, whose lyrics tell of a gentle push and pull between the desire for sun and escape and the tug of anxiety, with peaceful resistance winning the day and guiding the tone. The restless traveler Johnson gives us a few of his signature traveling songs such as “Eclipse,” and “Red Line,” both showcases for the stellar rhythm section of Omar Ahsanuddin and Dusty Jermier. Their unparalleled sense of groove and restraint leaves ample room for Nash Whalen’s keyboard flourishes. There is movement and urgency in these tracks without aggression, a rolling foundation of rhythm over which Johnson’s voice floats and elongated melodic guitar lines soar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach song shimmers with a distinctly Wooden Shjips sound, a relaxed summer vibe. This was a conscious choice, an atmospheric goal that influenced nearly every detail: the tones, the delay types and reverbs used, as well as the synthesizer elements that color the songs. The basics were recorded by Jason Powers at Types Foundry Studio in Portland. The guitars and vocals were largely recorded in Ripley Johnson’s comfortable home studio. Pronounced as \\’brü-ē\\ [French, literally, noise].\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith their stunning debut, French art rockers Bruit have dropped an early contender for album of the year“, PROG exclaimed when the album was digitally released on Bandcamp in April 2021, and Neige from ALCEST found it to be „the best post rock I heard in a really long time“. We couldn’t agree more, but it would curtail this album’s scope, grandeur and vision if it were contextualized solely within the post rock world. It certainly does ft in there — but BRUIT ≤ are more than that, BRUIT ≤ are a class of their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEmerging from the ashes of a number of French major label pop bands in 2016,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBRUIT ≤\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewas born from the desire of the members to escape the nauseating world of music big business and to return to a pure process of creation without artistic constraints or commercial expectations. Initially the band performed their creative research and sonic experiments solely in a studio setting, but time has shown that the ensemble’s artistic vision could not be limited to the recording environment alone. In the world of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBRUIT ≤\u003c\/strong\u003e, spontaneous experimentation, thoughtful composition and the aspect of performing in order to create are different but inevitably inseparable techniques of working on the same fabric: the black magic that is creating music. Artistic Identity comes from reconciling these different techniques and approaches of working on and with that fabric, and to understand this better while listening to this album, it helps to make yourself aware that one half of the musicians is classically trained, while the other half is not and barely knows how to read notes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe shifting to and fro between theory and practice, between research and performance and between thought and action are ultimately also refections of the band’s fercely activist mindset. The social and environmentalist themes that this record is orbiting around are epitomized in aphoristic spoken word passages from the French far left geneticist Albert Jacquard on the album opener “Industry”, or from the 2011 documentary If a Tree Falls: a Story of the Earth Liberation Front in “Amazing Old Tree”, where the speaker claims that environmentalists are often called ‘radical’… ‘however, the reality is that 95% of the standing native forest in the United States has been cut down. It’s not radical to save the last 5%, what’s radical is logging 95%“.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the emotive power of The Machine is Burning… stems not from the topical use of quotes, but from the act of creating overwhelming beauty through contrast between beauty and noise. BRUIT ≤ have everything a quintessential post-rock act needs to have, from an excessively long album name to drawn out compositions driven by atmosphere, and from samples of dramatic spoken word recordings to immaculate climaxes led by soaring, delay-soaked guitars. However, there are distinct differences between the two: The Machine is Burning…is stylistically more diverse and feels more like a carefully constructed affair with a focus on compositional fnesse rather than the element of improvisation, compared to the Canadian collective’s lengthy tunes which slowly gain intensity through repetition and layering. Whereas Feelings formed over collaborative jams with friends, Angelo’s sessions presented Murphy and Stuart a chance to record at their most intimate, “to get us out of our grief and into our bodies,” says Murphy. They explored new moods and styles, reaching for effervescent dance tempos and technicolor backdrops, vibrant hues in contrast to their more somber human experiences. Angelo beams with positivity and creative renewal — a resourceful, collective answer to “what\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehappens now?”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAngelo the car is a 1981 Toyota Celica they got off Craigslist during their first stint in Los Angeles, where Murphy and Stuart have since settled. “Such a bro-y, ‘80s dude car, it’s been super fun to drive around in a new town,” Murphy says. “He’s older than us, he’s a classic, he’s got a story.” It is a spiritual vehicle with a cinematic appeal, first dropping them off in an alleyway for the scene-setting intro, “Which Way To The Club.” The question is quickly resolved by “Take A Trip” as a cruising bassline mingles with crowd sounds, hand-claps, cuíca hiccups, whip-cracks, even a horse neigh. Brijean have found some club on this cross-dimensional trip — the kind of imagined space or chamber within one’s self capable of “shifting a fraction of who you are,” says Murphy. They wrote the track with the simple intention to be “as free as we could be,” adds Stuart, likening the flip on the B section to a realm unlocked: ”What if the world changed completely? You open the door to a new room.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNext is \"Shy Guy,\" a motivational anthem for the wallflowers among us. Murphy sets up the daydream: “We are in junior high, we’re on the dance floor, what’s going down, who is dancing, who is not, how are we gonna make them dance?” The narrator, the MC, hypes up the room as conga-driven rhythms bounce between languid synth and guitar lines. “Show me how to move…I feel something…I know you feel it too,” Murphy sings sweetly, calling back to the opening lines of Feelings, and this time the audience chants it back. It is easy to picture Brijean performing this one — something they only got to do a handful of times until more recently, opening shows for Khruangbin and Washed Out, an experience they found informative. Murphy explains, “It was inspiring to be out there and let loose more. To see how people can expand their expression on stage gave me more liberty with how I viewed my musicianship. My role for so long was to be a backup percussionist, so why would I ever leave the drums, you know?
